⚠️❄️ HERE COMES THE SNOW: Thursday’s Morning Commute Could Be Snarled by Lake Effect Flurries Northwest of the GTA

As we’ve been mentioning over the past few days, it looks like Southern Ontario is about to get its first real taste of winter.

That begins tonight and continues into Thursday morning as lake effect precipitation bands develop off Lake Huron and Georgian Bay.

Some light snow was already seen earlier today in northern sections of Southern Ontario, but this threat will expand overnight into areas that haven’t yet seen their first flakes of the season.

We’re already seeing signs of the lakes coming alive this evening as cold air filters into the upper atmosphere. With surface temperatures expected to drop near or just below freezing overnight, those lake effect showers will begin to flip over to wet snow by Thursday morning.

The most likely area to see this will be the higher elevations of the Dundalk Highlands, including Shelburne and Orangeville, where temperatures tend to be a bit cooler. However, some models suggest this wintry mix could extend farther south and east into surrounding regions, including Grey-Bruce, Collingwood, Barrie, York Region, Brampton, Guelph, and Kitchener.

While we’re not expecting major accumulations, any snow that does fall could briefly coat surfaces in a slushy mix. This will be the first snowfall of the season for many, and that means the Thursday morning commute could be a slow one as drivers adjust to winter conditions. Many likely haven’t switched to their winter tires yet, and with wet roads and dropping temperatures, there’s also a risk of black ice forming overnight.

This is only the beginning. We’re also keeping a close eye on a system expected to arrive this weekend that could bring widespread snowfall to a large portion of Southern Ontario late Saturday through Sunday. There’s still a lot of uncertainty with the track of that system, which will determine who gets the heaviest snow.

Behind that, colder air could trigger another round of strong lake effect snow early next week. Don’t be surprised if some of the traditional snowbelt areas are digging out and seeing school bus cancellations as we head into next week.

More details soon. Dust off those shovels as you’ll be needing them soon!
