Silvertone Hills: Limits (2023) - mini-review

Canadian band Silvertone Hills are out with the album "Limits", and this is a production one might find somewhere inside the rock section of a music store. I experience this album as an interesting mix between a few different traditions. One of the key foundations here is a variety of indie rock that at times reminds me more than a little bit of 80's and 90's indie rock darlings R.E.M. and their combination of uplifting and melancholic landscapes. At the same time the inclusion of gentle psychedelic elements, vintage era keyboards and lead and backing vocal harmonies all come with references back to The Beatles as far as the origins of those traditions are concerned. With an occasional little bit of Americana tossed in for good measure, and possibly a slight seasoning of 90's Brit pop too. This is all wrapped up in a liberal coating of pop music sensibility, with many of the songs coming across as tunes tailor-made for FM radio play. If well made and suitably polished indie rock that mix and blend elements from the 60's, 80's and 90's inside of a psychedelic indie rock context strikes you as an interesting landscape to discover, this album should be a worthwhile one to become more familiar with.
