A 100-year-old home often doesn’t have insulation because when it was built (around the 1920s or earlier), insulation wasn’t commonly installed in walls. Homes were typically built with:
* Solid wood framing and plaster walls
* Little or no wall insulation
* Attics that might have only a small amount of insulation added later
* More reliance on coal, wood, or oil heating, with less concern about energy efficiency
Many older homes in Ontario still have empty wall cavities unless insulation was added during a renovation. It’s very common to open up a wall in a century home and find no insulation at all.
