Been working with a client on this hedge for quite some time, going back and forth on whether to remove it entirely or try to correct years of overgrowth onto the sidewalk.

A simple trim sounds easy—but in reality, cutting it back to the property line right now would leave large bare spots that could take years to fill back in. In a high-traffic, highly visible area, that’s not a great look.

So instead, we took a different approach.

We carefully pulled the hedge back off the sidewalk and installed 18 stakes to begin retraining its growth pattern. This isn’t something I’d normally recommend—but this hedge is over 40 years old and part of the character of a historic property. It deserves the effort.

Last year, the city issued a warning to cut it down significantly. We pushed back. Sometimes it’s not just about compliance—it’s about preservation.

Would it have been easier to remove everything and plant new cedars? Absolutely.But when a client wants to preserve something meaningful, you do everything you can to make it work.
