🌍 Happy World Water Day 2026! 🐟

Yesterday, March 22nd, was World Water Day, and AWN would like to celebrate the health of our rivers, lakes, wetlands, and coasts, as well as acknowledge the strength of our Atlantic community-based monitoring groups! 💧

At AWN, we are committed to providing the resources needed to protect watersheds. Do you know how to monitor or protect your local waterways?

⁣Building capacity for water quality monitoring is one of our favorite things to do!⠀ ⠀ ⠀

This week, we stopped by SMU’s third-year Aquatic Environments class for some hands-on YSI training. This group is more than ready for their field study at Sandy Lake, and we’re happy to hook them up with YSI units and other gear from our Halifax Equipment Bank.⠀

Thanks, Saint Mary's University Halifax, for having us back again this year, and good luck in the field!

⁣Did you know that many watersheds in Nova Scotia are still considered data deficient when it comes to water quality? The lack of monitoring in these watersheds leaves a critical gap in our understanding of ecosystem health across the province.⠀ ⠀ ⠀ ⠀

At AWN, we’re working to fill these gaps by supporting the development of new community-based water monitoring programs. By providing training, equipment, and lab analysis funding, we’ve empowered two groups to start monitoring programs in the Tangier River Watershed (Otter Ponds Demonstration Forest) and the Middle River Watershed (Larder Lake).⠀

Stay tuned to Atlantic DataStream to explore these two new datasets in Nova Scotia. Big thanks to our funders, the Government of Nova Scotia and the TD Friends of the Environment Foundation.
