We invite you to learn with us about Nova Scotia’s Eastern Hemlock trees and a threat they face—the Hemlock Wooly Adelgid (HWA). This insect has the potential to drastically impact our Sackville parks. As of spring 2025, HEMLOCK WOOLY ADELGID HAS NOT YET BEEN IDENTIFIED IN OUR COMMUNITY. Join with us on social media as we learn about hemlocks and what the community can do to help protect our hemlock trees. On Sunday, June 8th at 10:30am we will have a hands-on learning event in the parks with local experts. Please consider joining us for this event.
If you identify the presence of the Hemlock Wooly Adelgid on private land or in our parks please notify HRM by calling 311 and the Canadian Food Inspection Agency (CFIA) by filing out this CFIA form.
For more information on the Hemlock Wooly Adelgid please check out nshemlock.ca.

When it comes to pests, we seem to be having an increase in the tree killing variety. While the causes can vary for pest propagation, the treatment for most unfortunatly is removal and destruction. Please be vigilant of insects and care for your trees. Not just for your wallet (trees add value to property), but for the planet. You don't have to be an expert but just be aware. Sometimes it's as easy as sending a photo to your local university, museum, department of the environment or an arborist/specialist for identification concerns. If results are positive, then a plan can be developed for mitigation. Hopefully saving trees for future generations to enjoy and benefit from.
🚩 Are we hosting the same pest? 🚩
The spongy moth’s back again…and bringing thousands of eggs to start the next wave.
🚫 Wrap trees with burlap and scrape off those eggs.
