Recently, while reviewing a new client’s RESP, I discovered something worrying:

Their plan couldn’t be transferred to another institution, and even stopping contributions came with severe penalties.

All this because of a few lines in the fine print that most parents never read.

So before you open an RESP with any sponsor or advisor, ask these simple but powerful questions:

✅ Can I stop my contributions if I lose my job or change my mind?
✅ Can I transfer this RESP to another provider later?
✅ What are the fees or penalties if I make changes?
✅ Can I see these details clearly in writing?

An RESP should give you flexibility, not stress.

Take your time, read carefully, and if needed, seek a second opinion.
