BILL RILEY AWARD & SCHOLARSHIP 🏆🎓

We are proud to accept submissions for the Bill Riley Award and Bill Riley Scholarship, two annual honours that celebrate the legacy of one of our province’s great hockey trailblazers.

On Dec. 26, 1974, Bill Riley made history with the Washington Capitals when he became the third Black player to play in the NHL. The Amherst native went on to play parts of five NHL seasons with the Capitals and the Winnipeg Jets.

The Bill Riley Award is presented annually to a player of African Nova Scotian descent who embodies the qualities Riley displayed throughout his career, including being an exceptional teammate, demonstrating competitiveness, passion for the sport, and a tenacious work ethic.

The Bill Riley Scholarship, a $2,000 scholarship, is awarded annually to a graduating player of African Nova Scotian descent who plans to pursue post-secondary education. Like Riley, the recipient should be a driven, hard-working student who is passionate about hockey.

Through his resilience, leadership, and love of the game, Bill Riley has inspired generations of players across Nova Scotia and beyond.

The deadline for submissions is April 15.
