It’s 2026 and the era of 30 hashtags is officially over. 📉

Last year, we saw our feeds change from our regular square layout to the 3:4 ratio. While the iconic Instagram feeds fade away with the rollout, this change actually fits our phone screens much better as smartphones already capture in 3:4 📱

Now that the new 2026 guideline just released, there are some notable changes that many of you probably already anticipated.

Out are those 30 hashtags and in are SEO keywords.

Instagram’s algorithm uses "semantic search" to understand the actual context of your words and the visual elements in your photos, which means it no longer needs a wall of hashtags to categorize your content. Due to over-saturation, hashtags don’t work like they used to. Now that Instagram has limited use to 5 hashtags (or for some of us, just 3), we’re moving toward a search engine model that prioritizes SEO keywords to get your content seen. 🔍
