this week highlights one of the patients we are overwintering: this beautiful Swainson's Hawk! 🦅

This patient was admitted into WILDNorth's care on August 30, 2025, after being found in a ditch, presumably after being hit by a car. They exhibited obvious symptoms of head trauma but, luckily, did not present with any fractures. Since Swainson's Hawks are a migratory species, generally having fully left the Edmonton area by October, we did our best to treat this patient with the intention of releasing them before the end of their species’ migration.

Unfortunately, the patient was still exhibiting neurological symptoms and did not pass their flight test, indicating they needed additional time in rehabilitative care. Due to this unfortunate timing, it was decided that this patient would benefit from being overwintered at WILDNorth.

Since August, this patient has been at our Parkland County rehabilitation location receiving species-specific care and enrichment. We look forward to releasing them back into the wild this spring!

Starting off the week on this bright Monday morn,..
He’d like to say thanks to his fans far and wide,
For asking about him with love and with pride.
He’s large and in charge, that much is clear,
The king of the clinic, year after year.

He dreams of adventures, of traveling far,
Perhaps as a famous feline superstar!
But alas, his mug shot hangs on the door,
A “Do Not Release” sign we simply can’t ignore.
So inside he reigns in fluffy disguise,

With whiskers so mighty and wise golden eyes.
He loves to sleep, eat, and repeat, what a treat!
Curled up in his throne (or right at your feet).
Then swat! goes a paw as you’re walking on by,
Just a gentle reminder: “I’m watching,” says I.
For Percy stays near , always close by,
With a flick of his tail and a watchful eye.
