THE DOG FOOD

Sometimes overgiving doesn’t look loving.

Sometimes it looks like abandoning yourself.

Years ago I was living with severe back pain.

One evening we ran out of dog food.

The store was about to close.

I asked if someone else could go.

The answer kept being...

“Later.”

So despite being in pain...

I drove myself.

I had someone at the store lift the bag.

Someone else loaded it into my vehicle.

I came home hurting even more.

At the time I thought I was being responsible.

Today I see something different.

I had spent years believing it was my job to rescue every situation.

Even when it hurt me.

Especially when it hurt me.

Healing has taught me something beautiful:

Helping isn’t always healthy.

Sometimes love looks like allowing another person to experience the consequences of their own choices.

That lesson changed my life.

Now I ask myself one question:

“Am I helping...
..or am I abandoning myself?”
