Something interesting - From Firefighting history 🚒
The “Wet Beard”
Before the invention of modern respiratory protection, firefighters often relied on simple but creative methods to survive smoke-filled environments. One of the earliest techniques involved growing a thick beard, soaking it in water, and biting down on it while entering a fire. The wet beard was believed to help cool and filter some smoke and embers before they were inhaled.
As respiratory technology evolved, firefighters transitioned from wet cloths and beards to primitive leather and metal respirators, eventually leading to today’s self-contained breathing apparatus (SCBA).
Interestingly, while modern SCBA requires firefighters to be clean-shaven where the facepiece seals, the firefighter moustache has endured as a proud tradition in the fire service. Once associated with early respiratory practices, it has become a symbol of pride, heritage, and the generations of firefighters who came before.
