Today’s Sauble memory is from 2014

Steve had just ended a 6 year winless streak at the start of the year by winning at Sunset Speedway.

Steve had always wanted to win here because it was his favourite track on the schedule and always ran good. Over the years he was in contention but dumb luck always popped up.

He was black flagged numerous times for speeding down the back pit lane as he was coming into the pits (too many to count), he’s been spun while leading, transmission broke, caught in someone’s wreck and one time he was starting pole in the feature and Steve forgot to put the gas cap back on and he was black flagged before the green flag (why he doesn’t work on the car much).

This race played out perfect for Steve as he got into the lead and held on for his first feature win!

It was extra special as it was the first time Steve won with Vanessa in the stands (she missed the sunset win as she was at a wedding).

We will see what we can dig up in the next few days!

Here’s the victory lane picture and the GoPro video of the feature!

Our first Sauble memory comes from 2002.

This was Steve’s rookie season even though he wasn’t qualified to be a rookie because he raced go-karts. It was a stupid rule and the “Freshman of the Year” was created for this……

The season would see upwards of 24 cars at each race. Due to it being his first season he had to start at the back of the heat races and features until the club deemed he was ready to take his starting spot.

It was a rough go at the start of the season as Steve tried to figure out how to drive a stock car (Steve practised a CVM and Terry kings challenger car for a while during the 2001 season).

It was at Sauble where Steve finally won his first heat race, it was incredible to finally get to park on the front stretch and hold a flag for his picture!

The club had a tradition of handing out heat win and feature win stickers for the car and it was an honour to finally get one! The sticker is still on Steve’s helmet 24 years later! (Will add a picture of it later)
