Positive Meeting with Alberta Justice Regarding PAS Course in Rural Alberta
ARLO led a Drayton Valley delegation into a meeting with Alberta Justice regarding the delivery of the Parenting after Separation (PAS) course in rural Alberta. The PAS course is mandated by the Court of Queen's Bench for separated and/or divorced parents with children under 16 years of age. The course is intended to help parents make positive choices about how they will continue to parent their children after separation.
The 6-hour course was successfully facilitated by lawyers and therapists across Alberta but has recently been reduced to in-person courses for only Edmonton and Calgary. The rest of the province can only access the course online in the form of an eCourse. Although the eCourse material is quite robust, technical issues with the online platform were brought to the attention of the ministry. But, more worrisome is the fact that online course delivery will never replace in-person interaction on a subject matter that is so delicate and crucial for the well-being and development of young children. May parents going through a relationship breakdown are suffering a form or another of isolation and abandonment. Having these parents sit alone in front of a computer screen for hours denies them of the human and social interaction they need from professional and peer supports. Testifying with real-life accounts at the meeting were a RCMP Sergeant, a Therapist/former PAS facilitator, as well as Drayton Valley’s FCSS (Family and Community Support Services) Program Coordinator.
The next steps involve ARLO, Drayton Valley FCSS, and its provincial association working with Alberta Justice to correct immediate issues with the online eCourse and initiating a conversation to better deliver the PAS course to Albertans living and rural areas and regional centers.
