This is a class that offers so many pleasant surprises!
Using indigo is an ancient artform, thousands of years old in fact. Learn how to dye natural cloth with indigo dye – it starts out green and turns many shades of blue, according to what you do with it.
Not only that, but you can fold the cloth, stitch it, scrunch it with rubber bands, wrap it around all sorts of everyday objects like bolts to create patterns in varying shades of blue.Or apply your ingenuity and come up with new techniques! Shelly will have many ideas that you can try out, too.

AC1706 Mixed Media Book Forms: 4-Day Book Arts Retreat - Arlene Westen - July 13 - 16
Summer Week-long Retreat at Artelier!
This 4-day beginner Book Arts course is designed as a gentle, skill-building journey, with each day building on techniques learned the day before. Using both paper and fabric, participants will explore a range of expressive book forms while developing core bookbinding skills.
Day 1 begins with painted and collaged accordion structures, introducing folding, composition, and surface design.
Day 2, we’ll build on those foundations to create a Dos-a-dos book filled with found poetry and colour.
Day 3 expands into scroll books, incorporating fabric and found materials for added texture and storytelling.
Day 4, participants will complete a waxed cover Coptic binding, bringing together stitching and structural techniques learned throughout the course.
By the end of the workshop, participants may complete up to seven unique books, each reflecting their growing confidence and personal artistic voice.
Multi-disciplinary artist, Arlene Westen, brings over 30 years of teaching experience to her students. Her proficiencies include mixed-media, collage, surface design, book arts, and printmaking.
After graduating from Grant MacEwan University with a Visual Arts Diploma, she earned two further baccalaureate degrees: Fibre Art (Honors) from the Alberta University of the Arts, and a Studio Arts Degree (Honors with Great Distinction) from University of Lethbridge.

• Blending methods for smooth transitions and atmospheric landscapes
• Layering and mark-making to add depth, texture, and movement
• Colour mixing directly on the surface
• Creating expressive skies, mountains and water reflections
Whether you are new to oil sticks or looking to expand your artistic practice, this workshop offers a creative and supportive environment to experiment, learn, and create a stunning landscape to take home.
Classically trained in Eastern Europe, Oksana began her art career in L'viv, Ukraine. Oksana studied at the Ivan Trush College of Decorative Arts. She chose to make painting, especially of murals, her specialty. In 2001, she held her first solo exhibition at the L'viv University of Ivan Franko. Oksana brings her training, skill, and passion to her painting, and she is versatile in expressive styles. She is adept at many genres, including portraiture, still life, and landscape.
