She studied law. She worked in Noh theatre. At 33, the economy collapsed and she came home to her family’s sake brewery in Akitsu, Hiroshima.
She had no formal brewing training. The brewery was struggling. And the rice variety her region was once famous for had been extinct for over a century.
So she brought it back. 13 years. One rice variety. From a handful of seeds in a seed bank to the only brewery in the world producing it.
Meet Miho Imada — president and tōji of Imada Shuzo, one of the only women in Japan to hold both roles simultaneously, and one of the most important figures in sake today. In 2020, the BBC named her among the world’s 100 most inspiring and influential women.
The Fukuchō name — meaning “Forever Fortune” — was given to the brewery in 1868. Miho-san is still earning it.
