Huge thanks to the Banff Centre for Arts and Creativity and Kyla for the lovely feature!
Not pictured but I owe a ton of gratitude to Suzan Marie Lucy Ann Yakeleya D'Arcy J. Moses and Christina Gerke for the support and help completing this garment! I wouldn’t have been able to complete in time if it weren’t for them and their advice, and work. ❤️❤️❤️
I look forward to the hope of doing another one of these amazing residencies. I loved my time there, meeting the amazing designers, working alongside some fierce artists.

From March 6-26, 10 Indigenous Designers from across Canada came together at the Banff Centre for the Arts to participate in the inaugural Indigenous Haute Couture Fashion Residency.
I was one of those chosen designers. We were tasked with creating a couture skirt and vest that uses our own chosen medium, techniques and materials.
We were mentored by the renowned Indigenous Dene designer D’Arcy Moses.
This piece pictured is what I created.
I sketched, drafted the patterns, cut and sewed everything from the under cage which I hand dyed with tea, to the 7-layer skirt and vest.
The fringes/tassels are horsehair, with dentillium shell cones, moosehide discs and crystals attached by sinew. I was blessed to have had Lucy Ann Yakeleya and Suzan Marie help me by making most of the tassels and attaching them to the skirt by hand. Darcy Moses, Christina Gerke and Julie Grenier also attached the tassels for me while I rushed to complete on time.
Julie Grenier modeled for me and looked so lovely.
Rita Taylor (in house photographer at banff centre) took the photos. Thank you so much, they look awesome!
Linda Jargina-Sahoo did the beautiful makeup.
It all came together so great!
The 9 other designers in attendance become great friends aand colleagues ❤️
I’ll do another post highlighting their amazing works 🙂

I’m still kinda shook from last nights show. To be able to take part in this event was really such a blessing. I was surrounded by so many talented and inspiring people. There’s way to many to name but really I need to acknowledge the Heart of the City Music Festival for making this happen. Corine Demas Mike Siek Fay Fey Dunaway (and your partner he was such a good dude) and the rest of the team, volunteers, all of our amazing backstage people Kateo, Erin’s child Kirra ( she was such a pro omg). Our Mc Jodi Calahoo Stonehouse, super awesome photographer Curtis Cameron, the coolest DJ I know Matthew Creeasian, Cindy rivers Comedy!
The food and the kind hearted friends of Nekêm, who not only blessed the food but hunted it, prepared it but gives and gives to the community Vee Point you’re really a human I admire so much.
Our models Eva Brertton, Darrel Brertton jr., Mallory Kimotastim, Kamryn Yawnghwe, Hinauri Nehua-Jackson, Sidney Ahuaiti, Alexis mah, Sheena T Kaine Chantel Willier, Faye Wolfe you really elevated our work.
Of course the super talented and cool humans/designers Aunty Erin’s Custom Regalia (Erin-Nicole Meetos) and Acahkos Designs (Rhonda Johnson) who lit up the runway with your shine! I’m so happy to be considered peers, you’re amazing!
And anyone else who attended, supported, share and sent kind words. Thank you so much.
I really feel so proud to be a part of an amazing art community in Edmonton.
Lastly, I need to give major props to my family who support me. I was a ball of nerves and lived on coffee and ci******es for a month just trying to do my thing. Creating this collection was hard but it’s worth it. I struggled but I’m going to bed with a full heart and a little bit of a new outlook ❤️
Thank you to Curtis Cameron Photography for the photos, they’re so nice!
And to think this whole idea for this show came from two random ladies meeting around a campfire just shootin the s**t 🥰😉
