A psychological assessment is often the first step in helping a child access the supports they need to succeed.

These assessments can identify ADHD, autism, PTSD, anxiety disorders, learning disabilities, and other needs, while also determining eligibility for school accommodations and specialized services. However, private assessments are financially out of reach for many families.

Without timely assessments, children miss critical supports, while families face growing financial and emotional strain.

As YWCA Edmonton continues to secure grants, donations, and funding, we remain committed to improving equitable access to psychological assessments for children and families in our community.

Today is National Indigenous Peoples Day and the beginning of the summer solstice – a time when, for generations, many First Nations, Inuit and Métis communities have celebrated their cultures, languages, and traditions. It’s a time of renewal, connection, and celebration.

At YWCA Edmonton, to better serve our First Nations, Métis, and Inuit clients, our Counselling Services staff receive training rooted in Indigenous knowledge and land-based approaches. Each counsellor has access to a smudging station and is encouraged to learn how to respectfully and appropriately incorporate traditional practices, guided by client preference and cultural protocols.

Upon client request, counsellors burn traditional medicines like sage, sweetgrass, cedar, or to***co to create a cleansing smoke. This can be grounding and relaxing for the mind and spirit, bringing a sense of peace and safety to clients as they discuss hard topics with their counsellors.

We are pleased to be able to incorporate this Indigenous way of healing into our sessions, and we continue to prioritize ongoing learning that deepens our understanding of Indigenous worldviews, histories, and healing practices.
