Here is an awesome pic of yours truly to lure you into reading an educational post (and flex my photography skills).

Box Jumps (as seen in the pic) are a great form of plyometrics. But what even are plyometrics?

Essentially, they are a form of explosive training that specifically require a “pre stretching” or “loading” phase (like swinging your arms before a jump). Not all explosive training is plyometric, but all plyometrics are explosive!

That’s cool, but why even do plyometrics?

NASM (2018) notes that “Plyometric exercises enhance the excitability, sensitivity, and reactivity of the neuromuscular system and increase the rate of force production (power), motor unit recruitment, firing frequency (rate coding), and motor unit synchronization”.

TL;DR, plyometrics can Improve coordination, reaction times, and power (force*velocity).

Here are some examples of some plyometric exercises from least difficult to more:
Jump Rope
Box Jumps
Ice Skaters

It should be noted that plyometrics can be difficult, and can result in injury if performed incorrectly. Start with less complex movements, and progress from there. It’s really important to have good core strength, balance, and good form when it comes to plyometrics.

Thanks for reading. If you have any questions, leave them in the comments. Have a great day.
