Renaissance Thinking for a Modern World

Why Themed Travel Is the Key to More Authentic and Transformative Adventures

In a world overflowing with bucket-list destinations and picture-perfect itineraries, one trend is quietly redefining what it means to truly experience a place: themed travel. Whether it’s a culinary tour through Italy, a wellness retreat in Costa Rica, an art-focused journey through Japan, or a history-driven adventure in Greece, themed travel offers something traditional trips often miss—deeper, more meaningful connections.

So, why does themed travel resonate so powerfully with today’s travelers?

First, themed travel creates instant community. When you join a trip centered around a shared interest—food, fitness, photography, spirituality, culture—you start the journey with built-in common ground. Conversations flow more naturally, friendships form faster, and group travel feels more intentional. You’re not just exploring a destination; you’re connecting with people who are passionate about the same things you are.

Second, themed travel fosters personal transformation. When your travel experience aligns with something you love, you engage more deeply. You learn new skills, push your comfort zone, and immerse yourself in local traditions with purpose. These are the kinds of moments that stay with you long after the trip ends, turning travel into something more than a getaway—it becomes a catalyst for growth.

Third, themed travel creates authentic cultural connection. Instead of hopping from tourist attraction to tourist attraction, you engage with local experts, artisans, chefs, guides, and communities who bring the theme to life. This leads to richer stories, more meaningful interactions, and a genuine sense of belonging.

As travelers increasingly seek experiences that inspire, educate, and connect, themed travel isn’t just a trend—it’s the future of transformative travel.

If you’re ready to go beyond surface-level sightseeing and experience travel with depth, intention, and connection, a themed journey might be exactly what you’re looking for. Where will your passion take you next?

Renaissance Thinking for a Modern World

The Grand Tour: Then and Now—Why Travel Still Shapes Us

In the 17th and 18th centuries, the "Grand Tour" stood as a rite of passage for young Europeans—mostly wealthy men—who traveled through cultural hubs like Paris, Florence, and Rome to complete their education. These journeys weren’t vacations; they were immersive experiences designed to build worldly understanding, taste, and character. Today, the concept of the Grand Tour may look different, but its core purpose remains as relevant as ever.

Modern travel still plays a crucial role in shaping perspective, broadening horizons, and building soft skills like adaptability, communication, and cultural intelligence. Whether it's a gap year, a sabbatical, or a career break, meaningful travel experiences challenge people to step outside their comfort zones and engage with the unfamiliar.

Businesses are catching on. Employers increasingly recognize the value of global exposure in developing leaders who can navigate complexity and lead with empathy. Someone who has navigated Tokyo’s rail system, shared a meal in a Moroccan medina, or volunteered in rural Peru likely brings more than stories back to the office—they bring insight, resilience, and a global mindset.

Today's Grand Tour doesn’t require aristocratic lineage or years of leisure. It can take many forms—remote work stints abroad, study programs, cultural exchanges, or slow travel adventures that prioritize depth over speed. The common thread is intentionality: travel that seeks meaning, not just escape.

And just like centuries ago, travel today still inspires innovation. Artists, entrepreneurs, and thought leaders regularly draw on global experiences to inform their work and challenge conventions.

We’re Traveling Again - The World's Your Oyster

Some destinations never closed (Florida), others closed to a greater or lesser degree. Flights were blocked, attractions closed. Like a great bear waking from hibernation, the travel industry is coming back to life.

There is no question that COVID is coming to an end and travel is possible again. The more countries make the vaccine available, the safer everyone feels.

Some destinations never closed (Florida), others closed to a greater or lesser degree. Flights were blocked, and attractions closed. Like a great bear waking from hibernation, the travel industry is coming back to life.

What Do You Need to KNow?

There is no “one rule fits all.” Because every government is handling the COVID rules differently, no one rule applies. There are only two things you can do. Do extensive research on the rules for the country you are leaving (how Canada applies its rules, for example, impacts on Canadians both leaving and entering the country) and the rules for the country you are going to. The other way to handle it is to go to a Travel Advisor and ask them - some are becoming health experts in their own right.

Whether you want to or not, get the vaccine - and keep your paperwork handy. Some people are refusing the vaccine on health grounds, and that is their right. However, most countries are demanding you take the vaccine and have your paperwork in order if you want to travel. If you don’t get the vaccine, plan on a lot of stay-cations.

Book Now! As more and more countries are nearing the end of their COVID vaccine programs, more and more of their citizens are planning to travel. Cruise Lines are now accepting bookings for 2022, and many are reporting sellouts. Entire countries have announced they are open to tourists - who have proof of taking the vaccine. Not surprisingly, it is hard even now to get airline and hotel books.

It seems premature to think past COVID and all of the restrictions. Yet, many are, and 2022 looks like it will be a great travel year. At 920 Travel, we are now booking trips to Mexico, Japan, and working on a guided tour to South Africa.
