Achievement unlocked 🟪🟪🟪⬛️⬛️🟪

Pat was our first full-time student at Delta BJJ, but more importantly he is the epitome of what it means to be a great student.

Not because he does what the instructor tells him to do, but because he has maintained a consistent sense of curiosity and enjoyment of BJJ from white belt to purple belt.

Always asking good questions, bringing new ideas to the mat, looking for opportunities to learn from anyone and everyone. He’s open-minded and dedicated to the process of continued learning, and makes sure his training partners have that same ability to explore and try new things.

Pat’s creativity, supportive presence, and constant smile make him a cornerstone of Delta BJJ and we couldn’t be happier to finally see him with his new belt.

Congratulations Pat, purple looks good on you!! 🟪🥋

“It’s just about proving to yourself that you can do something.” - Pat, 2 years with Delta BJJ

Word of advice from a black belt. 🥋

It’s never too late to start, we’re here to meet you where you’re at, and build up one step at a time. 🤝

Failure is personal.

That’s how it feels at least… it’s a hard pill to swallow. We blame ourselves, get frustrated, and discouraged.

But if we allow ourselves to get discouraged and quit, that’s the failure.

Every time you train you’re going to fail - to defend their attack, to prevent their sweep, to break their grip - and that’s exactly the point.

It’s a process of learning what doesn’t work.

You can’t do everything right the first time, part of growth is getting it wrong, reflecting, and trying again a different way.

If you can learn not to take failure so hard, to be kind to yourself and treat it as data, as an opportunity to learn, you’ll never get discouraged by failure ever again.

It’s a skill, which means it can be learned - with lots of practice.

One of the best parts of training is learning from different perspectives.

Every coach brings a different lens. Every student takes something different away.

A small detail to one person can be a breakthrough for someone else, it can be the missing piece they needed to make something work.

Moments like this are a reminder to stay open, on the mats and off. You never know which detail will be the one that clicks.

We’re grateful to have such an open environment for sharing knowledge, for Coach Carly’s generosity, and everyone who shows up ready to learn.

If you’ve been thinking about trying jiu-jitsu, come try it in a supportive, collaborative community, we’d love to have you.

Our friend Coach Carly is back again tomorrow night to teach us some slick new moves - don’t miss it!

Jiu Jitsu has an unlimited number of techniques, but constantly chasing new moves isn’t necessarily helpful.

Always take the time to drill and refine the fundamentals, because if you can’t reliably use those core, basic moves with success, you’ll constantly be chasing a new answer to the same problem.

Make sure that a good chunk of your training time is focused on improving your fundamentals, refining your existing moves, don’t just chase the new shiny and flashy ones ✨

Remember, drillers make killers! 💪🏻
