A new platform launches and suddenly everyone's on it. A competitor starts posting Reels and it feels like you should be too. Someone tells you to just use AI.
But before you add anything new to your marketing mix - or ditch something that feels like it isn't working - it's worth asking one question:
does this support what my business is trying to achieve right now?
Your marketing tactics should follow your business strategy. When it's the other way around, you end up busy but not moving forward.
Start there and the rest gets a lot simpler.

No, you don't have to dance on TikTok!
Earlier this week I ran a workshop for the Town of Cochrane 's SmartStart program - and it reminded me why I love doing this work.
We talked about why marketing feels so overwhelming (spoiler: you're seeing everyone else's output, not their strategy) and worked through the steps that actually need to happen first - knowing your goals, understanding your audience, getting clear on your message - before you even think about which tactic to use.
Every participant left with a first draft of a marketing strategy as a real output they can build on.
I loved all the questions too - including whether you can actually do marketing wrong and how much you should be spending on it.

Most of us can describe what we do in our sleep. Services, process, results β no problem.
But how you make people feel? That's what they remember. And that's what gets talked about over coffee or in a Facebook group when someone asks for a recommendation.
This month's prompt is about getting underneath the surface of your marketing.
Before you write your next post, update your website, or send your next email, ask yourself: what do I actually want someone to walk away feeling?
Confident? Relieved? Understood? Excited?
When you know the answer to that, everything you put out starts to sound more like you - and less like everyone else.
Take a few minutes this week to sit with it. You might be surprised how much it shifts what you want to say.
