We often get questions about the difference between a psychologist and a “therapist”. A registered psychologist holds a masters degree or higher and has gone through a provisional process before registration has been completed. That process involves 1600 hours of supervised practice, an ethics requirement (used to be a panel but is now the LEAP) and our jurisprudence exam. Once we have completed these things we are fully registered as a practicing psychologist. This process allows us to be covered by insurance companies and extended benefits. Look at your mental health practitioner’s credentials to ensure coverage. Psychologists can be called Therapists but the reverse is not always true.

Welcome Lindy,

Lindy is a practicum counselling student pursuing her Master’s in Counselling Psychology at Yorkville University. With a background in elementary education spanning 12 years, she has extensive experience working with children and families, particularly in navigating abrupt changes and challenges. This experience has equipped her with a deep understanding of these groups’ unique needs and challenges.

Lindy’s counselling approach integrates cognitive-behavioural techniques, solution-focused therapy and mindfulness-based practices to support clients in achieving their goals. She believes in empowering clients through strength-based approaches, fostering their sense of self-worth and self-advocacy. She is committed to creating a safe, non-judgmental space where clients can explore their feelings and develop effective coping strategies.

Lindy resides in Calgary with her children. In her spare time, she enjoys knitting, exercising, and spending time outdoors.

In a world that can sometimes feel overwhelming for little ones, providing them with simple yet engaging tools to support their well-being, creativity, and senses can help them feel supported. Sensory play has many benefits, especially for children of young ages. In the early years, children use their senses to understand and connect with the world around them.

Children are naturally curious about the world around them and the Sensory Play Jar is a great tool for them to actively engage their senses all while supporting their development through play

These sensory bottles are an excellent tool to promote relaxation, attract positive emotions in the child, and provide a moment of enjoyment to relieve their tensions. A good time to use it can be after some period of distress like a long car journey, arriving tired from daycare, or before going to sleep.

DYK: Play and creative fun is how children under 10 primarily communicate? Not only that- it’s fun for the therapist.

After a busy day trying to juggle work, childcare, dinner, and all of the other things that life throws at us, we often rush our kids through bath time and off to bed. It shouldn’t surprise you that this end of the day rush can often lead to tantrums over bedtime or difficulty relaxing into a sleepy state.

This can be particularly true when your children start really interacting with the world around them. New things learned can lead to difficulty relaxing before bed. For some children, daily life can cause anxiety and stress which leads to difficulty sleeping.

Michelle Kachur specializes in working with kiddos who struggle with big feelings or worries. Today she is making a bedtime calming kit…if you think your little one would benefit from some support, Michelle currently has space for new clients!
