Not rules. Refusals. 

We have a rule in our family: you move towards the thing the second you want it. Even when you have no plan, no money, no clue how it’ll work. You just start walking toward it anyway.

My partner is living our motto right now. He has a vision for a modern, luxe Caribbean bistro. Does he have a location? No. A business model? Not yet. A single one of the “prerequisites”? Nope.

What he has: last night he was testing recipes like a scientist — scale out, notebook open, recording every step. He’s building a social channel before there’s a restaurant. He’s throwing tasting parties before there’s a business. He’s catering parties for friends even before he has business cards. He is moving towards it before he’s ready.

And here’s why that works, even though every sensible voice tells you to wait until you’re ready: you move towards the thing to get in position — so that when the opportunities show up (and they do, they always do), you’re already close enough to catch them.

That’s what culture makers do. We don’t wait for permission or perfect conditions or the mythical day it’s all figured out. We start where we are, with what we have, looking slightly unhinged to everyone still waiting for the right time.

Because moving towards your vision before you’re ready IS how you get ready.
