Our way: learning together through play. You may be wondering about the brains behind Discovery Dome. Well, that’s me! My name is Madiha and Discovery Dome is a part of my elaborate plan to take over the world. It is, however, one piece of what I hope is a larger attempt to make a positive contribution to the communities I belong to. I believe that learning is a lifelong process and opportunities
for learning happen everywhere, all the time. There is no one way to learn. Neither, is there one best way to learn. Through Discovery Dome, I hope to offer opportunities, ideas and products that may help children (and the rest of us) learn! Below you will find some more information about me – my beliefs, background and credentials. If you’d like to know anything else, send me a message.
- You may have noticed that I refer to “learning” and not “teaching”. That’s because I prefer a bottom-up or organic approach to a top-down one. Teaching is just one way to try to achieve learning. Learning can happen without direct instruction.
- I believe that opportunity, exploration and reflection are key components in the learning process. As parents or educators, we can help to facilitate learning, but at the end of the day, the child will learn through the avenues that best appeal to him or her.
- I have lots of interests and hobbies, but the ones that are relevant to this initiative are: literacy, diversity, education, family and community.
- My formal educational background is in International Studies (the study of how various actors—peoples, states and international entities—interact socially, culturally, politically, and economically, and the implications of these interactions and relations for the rest of us) and Early Learning and Child Care (ages 0-6).
- I’ve studied a myriad of things: business, politics, languages, etc
- I am curious about globalization and its implications on identity.
- I crave culture and appreciate the arts.
- I enjoy creating things and have a fondness for handmade items.
- I am a new mother. While my professional aspirations have changed over the years, I always knew that more than anything, when I grew up, I wanted to be a mommy!
- I have worked and volunteered in various educational settings including preschools, settlement programs for children, religious instruction, kindergarten classes, after-school care, summer school, and in a multifaceted creative learning center.
- Some of these environments have been bilingual (English/French, English/Hindi, English/Urdu) or francophone.
- My mind is constantly buzzing with ideas and things that I would like to do. Fortunately (for the rest of me), my body and time is limited, so please bear with me as I sort things out and focus my attention on aspects that I hope will be particularly beneficial.
- I do not scare easily. If you have feedback or constructive criticism, I am all ears! I am open to learning
Thank you for taking the time to get to know me a little better. I look forward to having you and your family along on this adventure!
