Budgeting for Baby

✦ 𝐁𝐀𝐂𝐊 𝐓𝐎 𝐒𝐂𝐇𝐎𝐎𝐋 ✦ With back to school around the corner how do we prepare ourselves and our children? Here are some helpful tips that to implement over the next couple weeks:

𝐄𝐚𝐫𝐥𝐲 𝐭𝐨 𝐛𝐞𝐝, 𝐞𝐚𝐫𝐥𝐲 𝐭𝐨 𝐫𝐢𝐬𝐞 - This is best if you start a couple weeks before the first day. Limit screen time in the evenings, read or do a quiet activity before bed.

𝐄𝐧𝐜𝐨𝐮𝐫𝐚𝐠𝐞 𝐈𝐧𝐝𝐞𝐩𝐞𝐧𝐝𝐞𝐧𝐜𝐞 - Have them be apart of shopping for school supplies and clothing, children who play an active role in preparing for back to school are more likely to get excited about going back to school, which in turn eases their jitters.

𝐂𝐡𝐨𝐨𝐬𝐞 𝐭𝐡𝐞 𝐫𝐢𝐠𝐡𝐭 𝐛𝐚𝐜𝐤𝐩𝐚𝐜𝐤 -  Backpacks that are too heavy or worn improperly could result in muscle strain, headaches, and neck pain.

𝐇𝐞𝐚𝐥𝐭𝐡𝐲 𝐇𝐚𝐛𝐢𝐭𝐬 - Involve your children in choosing and preparing healthy lunches and snacks. Help them find physical activities they enjoy. Try to stick to regular meal times.

𝐌𝐚𝐩 𝐢𝐭 𝐨𝐮𝐭 - If your kids are starting at a new school, practice walking or driving to the bus stop or to the school building a week or two before school starts.

✦ 𝐓𝐇𝐈𝐍𝐆𝐒 𝐓𝐎 𝐃𝐎 ✦ Trying to take in the last few days of Summer? Here are a few things to do with the kiddies in the last weekends of the month!

✦ 𝐄𝐱𝐩𝐥𝐨𝐫𝐞 𝐚𝐪𝐮𝐚𝐭𝐢𝐜 𝐀𝐥𝐛𝐞𝐫𝐭𝐚 𝐚𝐭 𝐁𝐨𝐰 𝐇𝐚𝐛𝐢𝐭𝐚𝐭 𝐒𝐭𝐚𝐭𝐢𝐨𝐧- Indoor and outdoor activities at this aquatic attraction are a fun way to learn about Alberta’s fish, wildlife, and water. Feed fish on a guided tour of a fish hatchery, drop a line in the catch-and-release trout pond, stroll through the Interpretive Wetland, and explore the Discovery Centre’s exhibits and aquariums.

✦ 𝐇𝐞𝐚𝐫 𝐬𝐨𝐦𝐞 𝐜𝐡𝐢𝐥𝐥𝐢𝐧𝐠 𝐭𝐚𝐥𝐞𝐬 𝐨𝐧 𝐂𝐚𝐥𝐠𝐚𝐫𝐲 𝐆𝐡𝐨𝐬𝐭 𝐓𝐨𝐮𝐫𝐬- Walk the historic neighbourhoods of Inglewood, Kensington, the Beltline and Downtown Calgary as your lantern-wielding tour guide shares spooky tales of the past. Stories or legends, myth or reality, get insight on some of Calgary’s “permanent” residents. Tours are family-friendly and are meant to provide historical information and fun stories, not scare tactics.

✦ 𝐃𝐢𝐠 𝐮𝐩 𝐝𝐢𝐧𝐨𝐬 𝐚𝐭 𝐭𝐡𝐞 𝐑𝐨𝐲𝐚𝐥 𝐓𝐲𝐫𝐫𝐞𝐥𝐥 𝐌𝐮𝐬𝐞𝐮𝐦- Travel back in time at this attraction, featuring prehistoric exhibits, dinosaur fossils and guided hikes through the surrounding Badlands, a landscape unique to this area. Kids can even search for fossils and see real dinosaur remains at the Dinosite.

✦ 𝐆𝐞𝐭 𝐭𝐡𝐞 𝐤𝐢𝐝𝐬 𝐢𝐧𝐯𝐨𝐥𝐯𝐞𝐝- Have the kids join you in your budgeting adventure as well so they understand the importance! Start by setting a realistic budget before you guys go shopping, and lay the ground rules about compromise and comparing prices.

✦ 𝐆𝐞𝐭 𝐜𝐫𝐞𝐚𝐭𝐢𝐯𝐞 𝐭𝐨 𝐬𝐥𝐚𝐬𝐡 𝐭𝐡𝐞 𝐬𝐡𝐨𝐩𝐩𝐢𝐧𝐠 𝐛𝐢𝐥𝐥- There's a good chance school clothes will take up the biggest chunk of your back-to-school budget. But who says they have to be brand new? Trade clothes and books with other families, or hit the thrift stores and garage sales. If school uniforms are required, check whether the school has a trading or discount program.

✦ 𝐒𝐡𝐨𝐩 𝐭𝐡𝐞 𝐬𝐚𝐥𝐞𝐬- It seems that sales for back-to-school gets earlier and earlier. Before you recycle those weekly newspaper ads, scan them for retailer's sales on clothing and school supplies. Watch for coupons online, postcards and in the mail, and in-store promotions to look for deals.
