βοΈ "Must have a south-facing backyard."
If you've ever searched for a home in Calgary, you've probably heard buyers say this.
But why is a south-facing backyard such a big deal?
The answer is simple: sunshine. π
Because of Calgary's northern location, a south-facing backyard gets the most direct sunlight throughout the dayβespecially in the afternoon and evening when most people are actually outside enjoying it.
That means:
π More time relaxing on the deck after work
π± Better conditions for gardening
π Sunny BBQs and outdoor gatherings
βοΈ Faster snow melt in the winter
π‘ A bright, inviting outdoor living space
For many buyers, the backyard isn't just a yardβit's an extension of the home. And in a city that gets over 300 days of sunshine each year, maximizing those sunny hours is a big plus.
That said, a south-facing backyard isn't automatically the "best" choice for everyone.
Some homeowners prefer:
π³ More shade on hot summer days
π
Morning sun with cooler afternoons
πΆ A yard that stays comfortable for pets
πΆ Play areas that don't get full afternoon sun
The truth is that the best backyard orientation depends on how you plan to use it.
β¨ OUR BONUS TIP FOR YOU
When viewing a home, don't just ask which direction the backyard faces.
Ask yourself:
"When will we actually be using this space the most?"
The answer can help determine whether a south-facing backyard is a dream featureβor whether another orientation might suit your lifestyle even better.

π Things That Somehow End Up in Every Calgary Garage
After showing hundreds of homes over the years, we've come to one conclusion:
No matter the neighbourhood, price point, or size of the house... Calgary garages all seem to follow the same rules.
You know you're looking at a true Calgary garage when you find:
βοΈ At least 3 snow shovels
(Because apparently one is never enough.)
π§ Half a bag of sidewalk salt that's been there since 2018
π² Bikes that nobody has ridden in two years, but nobody is allowed to get rid of
π A collection of hockey sticks that could outfit an entire Timbits team
π Winter tires
And somehow they're always in exactly the spot where you'd like to park your vehicle.
π± Gardening tools purchased during a burst of spring optimism
π¨ Leftover paint cans labeled:
"Living Room?"
"Maybe Basement?"
"No idea."
π§° A toolbox containing 47 screws, 12 mystery keys, and one tape measure that nobody can find when they actually need it
π₯ Camping gear that's either used every weekend or never used at all
π¦ Boxes labeled "Important"
That no one has opened since moving in.
And of course...
π A garage built for two vehicles that somehow has room for exactly zero vehicles.
The funny thing is that garages tell a story.
They reveal hobbies, growing families, home projects, outdoor adventures, and years of memories.
β¨ OUR BONUS TIP FOR YOU
If you're planning to sell your home, the garage matters more than you think.
Buyers absolutely peek into garages during showings. A clean, organized garage can make the space feel larger, more functional, and better maintained.
So before listing, spend a few hours decluttering. You might be surprised how much of a difference it makes.
Now tell us...
What's the strangest thing currently living in your garage? ππ
