The STAMP TECHNIQUE is a simple direct composite technique that replicates the occlusal surface contours of the pre existing tooth. When is this technique useful? When the occlusal surface is mostly intact and you have an appliance that fits over the teeth. In this case, the patient wears a precision fit lower TMJ appliance so we wanted to minimize the amount of adjusting after the restoration was done. I'm happy to announce it was perfect fit!

BESPOKE OR SIGNATURE? There are many successful aesthetic dentists that have a signature look to all of their smiles. It helps to brand you and the work you do. I on the other hand have always tried to create smiles that the patient desires...natural, Hollywood, and everything in between as long as there is harmony with the teeth, lips, and face. Which is better? Try to tailor your work to each patient or to try and attract patients that want your signature look. What do you think? Should I switch to one signature look? Would love to hear your opinion!

There are many techniques for shade matching...standard shade photos, cross polarization, elab, send patient to lab, dslr, cell phone, shadewave, standardizing shade tabs, eyeballing...etc. I prefer to give my ceramist as much detail as I can. In addition to a macro photo and a cross polarization photo, I like to also send a panning video with shade tabs which shows my ceramist all different lighting angles of the tabs against the teeth. Often times, he will be there at the insert appointment for custom tinting in our environment.

Which methods do you like and how has it worked out for you? What other tips and tricks have you learned?

4 YEAR BONDING FOLLOWUP. Four years ago I had the pleasure to help this young girl. She recently had some trauma to the upper left central incisor ( #21 πŸ‡¨πŸ‡¦or #9πŸ‡ΊπŸ‡²) Her family dentist did some emergency bonding to help her but she didn't like how it didn't blend in with her tooth. There was a decent amount of translucency and internal characterization which required a careful layered approach. This case was done with Renamel from .

Upon examination of these photos, it's nice to see that there has been minimal shade change if any. I probably could've shaped the mesial corner a bit better and could've blended the margin more if I made a larger bevel but didn't want to remove very much tooth structure due to the very young age of the patient.

One interesting thing that I noted is how the surface texture of the tooth has changed over the years. Maybe it's just the angle or lighting?

The cross polarization photo shows the internal characterization/mammelons and thin incisal halo by removing the surface glare. Shade match was on point.

There is so much you can learn from using dental photography to analyze your work. Self evaluation is key to growth. I believe that it is the #1 most important tool to improve your dentistry. What do you think?
