Grass tetany is a metabolic disorder caused by low magnesium levels and is most common in mature, lactating cows grazing lush grass pasture. Symptoms include nervousness, muscle twitching, lack of coordination and staggering. In severe cases, animals may experience convulsions and death.
Risk increases on heavily fertilized pastures with high nitrogen or potassium levels. Including legumes in pasture mixes and providing mineral supplements containing magnesium oxide can help reduce risk.
