Being in the mountains is a happy place for me. There is something so amazing about how endless everything feels when I’m there. Watching my then 8 yr old son look at the vastness of the mountains, imagining how he’s going to take on this world, melts my heart!

The Last Spike photograph (1st pic) was taken by Alexander Ross, a Calgary photographer, who happened to be on site and was pressed into action when the expected photographer, Cornelius Soule, did not arrive.
Now, The Final Spike, taken by yours truly, Paul McGrath.
I had to tape off where I was planting my flag for the shot. I had to joust with 6 news crews and work with 2 local photographers (who were amazing), and direct a whole lot of brass to get the shot. It was incredible in every way possible!
It is named the Final Spike because it will never be done again in our lifetimes is what the CEO Mr. Creel said at the ceremony.
How amazing that both photographs were taken by Calgarian photographers…that’s pretty cool!

I had the privilege of shooting the merger of Canadian Pacific Railway and Kansas City Southern. I thought I was going to Kansas City to shoot this shot, which I did. Then I was told I was to recreate a historical shot called ‘The Last Spike’…no pressure! I did the recreation and my shot is now called ‘The Final Spike’. I will post that soon. For now, look at those awesome engines!!!

Remembering my walk my new friend Kent AYoungMan while working with S*k S*ka. Their land is magical and like this shot, seems to still be raw, beautiful land! Looking forward to warmer days waking into endless beauty!
