Today, the Permanent Peoples’ Tribunal on Missing Children and Unmarked Graves in Canada issued a preliminary declaration finding that Canada committed genocide against Indigenous Peoples through residential schools and other institutions.
“There’s no difficulty for us to accept that that composite path constituted genocide,” said panel judge Frances Webber.
The Tribunal, organized by the Native Women's Shelter of Montreal/Foyer Pour Femmes, and heard prosecution submissions from Aboriginal Legal Services.
“To conclude in the pattern of state actions and omissions we see continuing disdain for Indigenous lives, denial of their sovereignty over their data, their land, and their bodies and other violations of Indigenous peoples’ rights,” said panel judge Deanna Howard.
Reflecting on the declaration, Mohawk Institute Survivor Roberta Hill said, “This is something that gives me hope,... it's a long journey.”
The Tribunal's judges pointed to a pattern of state actions and omissions, concluding that the harms identified are not only historical, but ongoing.
A final ruling, including recommendations to the federal government, will be released on September 30th on National Day for Truth and Reconciliation.
The PPT will also send its findings to the United Nations, the Vatican, and the federal government.

It’s been five years since the tragic discovery at the former Kamloops Indian Residential School in Tk’emlúps te Secwepemc. Children who died as a result of the residential school system are still missing, and their loved ones deserve answers.
The Residential Schools Missing Children Community Support Fund is crucial to finding those answers. On this National Day of Action, we call on the federal government to protect and sustain funding and supports for Survivors, their families and communities to bring the children home.

On this day in 2024, the Israeli military burned Palestinians alive in a displacement camp in Tel al-Sultan, Rafah, during the weekend of Lag B’Omer — a holiday when Jews traditionally gather around bonfires. Among the victims was a beheaded Palestinian child. 50 Palestinians were killed, and more than 200 were injured by the Israeli military during their tent massacre.
We are appalled that on the anniversary of this atrocity, two years later, we are still demanding an end to the human suffering of Palestinians being genocided by the Israeli military in Gaza.
Now, nearly all of Gaza’s 2.3 million people have been displaced, and the Israeli military controls roughly two-thirds of Gaza — compared to the time of the Rafah massacre, when about half of Gaza’s residents had been forcibly displaced there. Despite repeated claims of a “ceasefire,” the Israeli military continues to bombard Gaza without pause.
We stand resolute in our belief that every life is precious. We will never forget the countless precious lives stolen by the Israeli military, and we will carry their memories with us as we continue to struggle for a free Palestine.
For over almost 3 years the US government has supported the Israeli genocide through the ongoing transfer of weapons and military funding. We hold both the U.S. and Israeli governments responsible for the mass killing of Palestinians in Gaza and the occupied West Bank; for the siege and starvation imposed on the people of Gaza; and for the widespread destruction of homes, infrastructure, and land.
We demand an end to all US funding to the Israeli military now. People of conscience throughout the world are calling for an end to genocide.
Call on Congress and demand they fund people, not bombs.
