Hi. I'm Yola, the face behind CCEsthetics. I'm going to be honest and transparent with you. I was very afraid to put my photo up because I thought it would hurt my business. I have worked in the beauty industry for 27 years.
The number one question people ask me is, "Do you know how to treat Caucasian skin?" At least half the people I have seen throughout my career asked me that. Some people have literally came out and said that they didn't think I knew how to treat their "delicate, fair" skin. After all, black skin is tougher than Caucasian skin. People really gave me a hard time when I worked in the doctors offices. As if the doctors were dumb enough to hire someone who wasn't highly trained.
So I'm going to set the record straight. Black skin IS NOT tougher than Caucasian skin. The contrary is true. The majority of laser treatments and peels I've performed on clients and patients, were not safe for me to have done on my skin. The pigment in my skin, absorbs the energy and burns...then scars. The deeper peels are also unsafe for my dark skin. Caucasian skin just heals. If it's safe for black skin, it's most likely safe for ALL skin types.
I have only ever treated less than ten Black people in my entire 27 years working in this industry.
Back in 1994, when I was learning aesthetics in college, my course instructor did not know how to care for ethnic skin types. She did not understand the higher level of sensitivity with ethnic skins, how much easier it is to injure ethnic skin types - she knew absolutely nothing. No one saw a problem with that.
After college, I studied biology in university. I had very, very bad acne on my face and body. The doctors back then, where I was from, told me they were not used to treating darker skin and were very limited with regards to how they could help me. I was in university at the time. I did my own research and cleared up my skin within three months, holistically.
My experience made me vow to help all ages and races, especially the difficult cases that people can't be bothered with. If you have skin, I can treat you.
