Dental cavities, also known as tooth decay, form when bacteria in the mouth produce acids that break down the tooth's enamel, the hard outer layer. Here’s how it happens: Bacteria and Plaque: Our mouth naturally contains bacteria that feed on food particles, especially sugars and starches. These bacteria form a sticky layer called plaque that adheres to the teeth. Acid Production: When bacteria digest sugars, they produce acids as a byproduct. These acids can erode the enamel, which is the tooth's protective outer layer. Demineralization: The acids cause a loss of minerals from the enamel, a process called demineralization. If this process continues unchecked, it weakens the enamel and creates tiny holes or "cavities." Progression: Over time, if the enamel continues to break down and no intervention is made, the decay can progress deeper into the tooth, affecting the inner layers (dentin and pulp), leading to pain, infection, and even tooth loss. Regular brushing, flossing, and avoiding excessive sugar intake help prevent cavities by limiting the plaque buildup and acid production.
