Energy security now sits at the centre of geopolitical stability. Many countries are facing severe and long‑lasting energy disruptions. In Canada, we are comparatively secure — but that security is uneven, fragile, and largely accidental.

Today, I spoke in the House of Commons about Ottawa’s plan to create a new “sovereign wealth fund.”
Here’s the issue: true sovereign wealth funds are built from surpluses — not borrowed money. Canada is already carrying massive debt, and borrowing billions more to invest puts taxpayers on the hook if things go wrong.
Canadians are struggling with the cost of living, and we already have private Canadian capital leaving the country because opportunities here are too uncertain. Before creating another government fund, we need to ask whether this approach actually helps Canadians — or just adds more risk.
