Introducing Objective Resolution Calgary’s First Annual Delegate Preparation Conference!

Want to refine your MUN skills? Want to win great prizes? Come check out ORC’s First Annual Delegate Preparation Conference! Tickets are on sale now for $5! The event will be happening on October 14th 2017 from 9:30-5:30 at the Earth Sciences Building at the University of Calgary.

The conference will include guest speaker presentations, a development workshop for delegates, and a Model United Nations Committee Session. This event is a great chance to meet some new people including key political figures in Calgary! In addition, we provide the platform for individuals to develop their public speaking and negotiating skills, all in a fun and engaging simulation. We've also got cool prizes up for grabs!

If you find yourself wondering how much preparation you will need to do in order to participate in our simulation, the answer is none! Our simulation is designed with common-knowledge topics to allow delegates of any level of experience to focus on developing their skills!

Shirley Chisholm is the next member in our Snapshot series. Shirley Chisholm was the first African-American congresswoman in the United States in 1968, and then went on to become the first major-party black candidate to make a bid for U.S. presidency.

Shirley represented the state of New York in the US House of Representatives for seven terms. She went on the run for presidency in the 1972 Democratic nomination, becoming the first African-American candidate to do so. She fought for education opportunities and social justice throughout her political career, but left Congress in 1983.

Chisholm graduated from Brooklyn College in 1946, where she began her career in teaching and went on to earn a master’s degree in elementary education from Columbia University. She served as a director of the Hamilton-Madison Child Care Center from 1953-1959, and as educational consultant for New York City’s Bureau of Child Welfare from 1959-1964.

Shirley became the first African-American congresswoman in 1968, being assigned to the House Forestry Committee, but demanded a reassignment. She was placed on the Veterans’ Affairs Committee and the graduated to the Education and Labour Committee. She became one of the founding members of the Congressional Black Caucus in 1969.

In 1972, Chisholm became the first major-party African-American candidate to make a bid for US presidency, running for the Democratic nomination. She was also a vocal opponent of the US military draft and was a champion on minority education and employment opportunities during the time she was in Congress. After leaving the Congress in 1983, she went on to teach at Mount Holyoke College.

Shirley passed away on January 1st 2005, but was awarded the distinguished Presidential Medal of Freedom in 2015 for her work.
