The Accessible Canada Act came into effect on July 11, 2019, with the goal of achieving a barrier-free Canada by 2040. We’re almost one-third of the way there.
7 is often considered to be a lucky number. It may seem like good luck if you enjoy an accessible service, visit a location with great wayfinding, have an easy time booking accessible transportation, or find an accessible parking space close to your destination, with enough clearance to safely exit your vehicle. But accessibility isn’t about luck. It’s intentional. It is planned for and prioritized. If a product or service is inaccessible, that isn’t your bad luck – that’s failure on the part of the provider or manufacturer. It all comes down to the choices we make.
If we’re going to reach our goal by 2040, we have to act on our intentions and make sure we choose to factor in accessibility every single time.
Speaking of the number 7, the ACA has 7 priority areas. Keep following us this month as we highlight each one.

Text underneath the dice reads “Accessibility can’t be left to chance. It’s about intentionality.” Our office’s applied signature and the Canada wordmark appear at the bottom.
