We are aiming to Reclaim the rites to practice religion regardless of sexuality or gender. We want to Include everyone equally without barriers because we all have sacred worth and are worthy of belonging. We want to Transform the negative cultural and religious attitudes that have been used to oppress LGBTQ people and exclude them from rites of passage. We want to Engage everyone in positive dial
ogue around these complex issues to create a strong and supportive community. Our conference will be a Safe space for all people to be able to attend and feel comfortable to be who they are. Human RITES was created because we recognize that religion, in a broader sense, still actively marginalizes LGBTQ people, which is why we want to create a space where people can discuss religion and sexuality comfortably and respectfully. While we recognize that many people have had experiences and are experiencing exclusion, there is still a growing movement in progressive faith communities. Our conference will feature various faith and community leaders who will speak to these significant topics.”
"Rites are something that we should all have access to - participating in a religion of our choosing, committing to another person, adopting, and in general, full inclusion in society. Many LGBTQ people are excluded from some or all of these rites of passage, whether legally, culturally, or silently. Sadly, religion at large has traditionally been an oppressor of LGBTQ people. Our culture has slightly shifted towards a more positive attitude in the past few decades, but we have a long way to go. We believe unequivocally that all people should have full access to the Rites that they choose, including whatever faith tradition fits their lives and values. Our goal with this conference is to create opportunities for education, reconciliation, and community for those who wish to grow in their journey and celebrate the sacred connections between us all."
