Today is Bell Let’s Talk Day 💙
A reminder that mental health is not just something we “think” our way through — it’s something the body experiences, especially through the nervous system.
In Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM), mental and emotional health is described through the concept of Shen - often translated as spirit or mind. Shen reflects how calm, present, and settled we feel.
When Shen is supported, we sleep better, think more clearly, and feel emotionally steady. When it’s disturbed, anxiety, overwhelm, racing thoughts, and exhaustion can show up.
This connects closely with what we understand today about the nervous system.
From an East-West perspective:
* Yin represents rest, nourishment, and recovery
* Yang represents activity, alertness, and output
When life keeps us in constant “go mode,” Yang becomes dominant and Yin doesn’t get a chance to restore balance. In Western terms, this looks like a nervous system stuck in fight-or-flight - and over time, mental health suffers.
Acupuncture can support mental health by:
• Calming the nervous system
• Supporting rest-and-digest responses
• Helping the body settle and regulate
• Improving sleep and stress resilience
• Offering a quiet, safe space to reset
Many people share that acupuncture is one of the few times their body truly feels calm - sometimes for the first time in a long while.
