The AER has rescinded Directive 035. This change follows Alberta Environment and Protected Areasβ shift to a voluntary baseline testing program.
What does this mean for Albertans?
Groundwater protection remains strong.
Over the past 20 years, companies submitted more than 16,000 baseline water well test logs, and the AER did not confirm any case of risk to public safety, environmental protection, or resource conservation that would require the directive to remain in place.
What isnβt changing:
βοΈ Strong well construction and integrity requirements
βοΈ Processes for investigating landowner water well concerns
βοΈ 24-hour reporting line: 1-800-222-6514
βοΈ Oversight through inspections and audits of CBM wells
The AER continues to encourage voluntary baseline water well testing to support transparency and help prevent future concerns.
