Did you know that today is the first day of Aromantic Spectrum Awareness Week (Feb 15th - 21st)?
Aromantic Spectrum Awareness Week was first celebrated from November 10th to 17th in 2014, It was moved to the week after Valentine’s Day the following year. The timing was absolutely intentional! As you could imagine, the hyper-romanticism of Valentine’s Day can be tricky for Aromatic folks to navigate. That's why we dedicate the following week to making space and better understanding our Aromantic community members.
But you might be asking yourself.. What does Aromantic mean? Don't feel bad for asking! It's actually a very common question as it's often wrongfully grouped with or confused for Asexual.
Simply put, Aromanticism (or Aro) is a romantic orientation where a person experiences little to no romantic attraction to others, where as Asexuality is an orientation defined by a lack of or limited sexual attraction. While some people may identify as a both (Aroace) its important to not assume that all Aromantic people are Ace.
While it may sound simple, the experiences of Aromantic folks are incredibly diverse, hence the ‘spectrum’ in Aromantic Spectrum Awareness Week. While some Aromantic people may feel absolutely no romantic attraction whatsoever, others may still experience it under specific circumstances, such as if an emotional connection has already been formed.
The Aromantic community often faces erasure and ignorance due to a lack of understanding, even within the q***r community. Much of this stems from amatonormativity, the belief that everyone seeks and should be in a long-term romantic relationship. This mindset leads to dismissal of Aromantic identities, harmful assumptions that they “can’t feel love,” attempts to “fix” them, and even exclusion from spaces meant to welcome the q***r community.
This Aromantic Spectrum Awareness Week, it’s our duty to support the Aromantic community however we can by ensuring friends, family, and community members feel welcome, included, and seen in our spaces year-round.
If you can, spend time this week listening to Aromantic community members and learning about Aromantic-serving organizations such as .
