The currency of connection is presence

In a world filled with constant noise and endless distractions, presence has become rare—and that’s exactly why it’s so powerful. For parents, being present with a teenager doesn’t mean having all the answers; it means showing up, listening, and creating space where they feel safe to be themselves. For leaders, presence isn’t just about being in the room—it’s about being fully engaged, attentive, and intentional. Presence communicates value in a way that words alone never can.

Presence requires choice. It’s easy to multitask, glance at our phones, or let our thoughts drift during conversations. But real presence demands we put aside distractions and focus on the person in front of us. Maya Angelou once said, “People will forget what you said, people will forget what you did, but people will never forget how you made them feel.” When you are truly present, you make people feel important, seen, and deeply valued.

The gift of presence transforms relationships. Teenagers who experience it build trust that lasts into adulthood. Teams who receive it develop loyalty that no paycheck alone can buy. Presence doesn’t cost money, yet it yields priceless returns—trust, connection, and growth. The real question is whether we are giving others our full presence or simply offering our proximity, because its presence—not just being nearby—strengthens the bonds that matter most.
