Discover 5 Human and Organizational Performance (HOP) Principles with a brief summary for each. For those more familiar with HOP, this is a great refresher.
1. People Make Mistakes (Error is Normal) - We are all human and we all make mistakes. When we design our HSE management systems and operational processes with the capacity to fail safely then we are setting our workforce up for safety success.
2. Blame Fixes Nothing - When we focus on what someone did wrong we lose sight of how our HSE management system and operational processes failed - and that is where we truly learn, get better, and prevent future injuries or loss.
3. Context Drives Behaviour - People do things for a reason. Many times the reason is based on the organizational context. In other words, the work environment has a major influence on why people behave the way they do.
4. Learning and Improving Are Vital - Continual improvement is based on learning from our mistakes or learning how we can prevent mistakes. This cycle should never end.
5. Leadership Response Matters - How a leader responds to an error influences how likely workers will report all incidents. If a leader responds with blame then reporting decreases. Instead, ask “What can we learn from this?”
