Why some reserves don’t have clean drinking water?
I am preparing a workshop on Indigenous Education, and this is one of the many questions participants have. By gaining a deeper understanding of Treaties, the Indian Act, and land claims, we can start shaping a more complete picture of the history we were never taught.
The most challenging part of this work is the fact that people don’t ask questions because they’re afraid of being attacked or caught in a debate. I usually recommend that people use the sentence starter, “I hear people say…” or, “someone I know said…” or, “someone asked me…” and follow it up with your question.
We won’t get anywhere if we continue to argue. This is our collective history and future. We will figure it out together.

Teens make the best listeners. They love life stories. They love to hear how you have, or are, overcoming challenges. They love to hear about how other people live their life too. They love stories.
It takes time to grow into the storytelling practice and weave in your values and your lessons. It’s an art, really. But it’s also a skill that helps in adult relationships, and how we communicate as teachers and leaders.
The Indigenous Ways of Knowing advocate for storytelling. It’s the most advanced way of learning and passing on teachings to young individuals. I’ve received some of the best advice from this young coach as well.
Education is also about exuding wisdom from others. Not only about sharing our wisdom with the next generation. It’s a beautiful thing. We have the ability to become better teachers and communicators.
