The design of the house is intentionally set to align with the north-south axis of the compass rather than aligning it with the road. The south elevation of the building has abundant windows as well as a wrap-around porch on the first level modulating light and warmth with a consciousness of the position of the sun.The effect of the passive solar features of the design contributes to creating a comfortable internal climate all year round.

The concept of creating homes from old growth forest timber frame barns was an idea that I developed into action rapidly. And when I had actually taken this one down, numbered the pieces and stored it, I felt nourished by a fire I couldn’t explain.

Perhaps it was the yearning I had for a home place like no other for myself and others. A desire for an ecology, more than a building, with a spirit of place that could hold and withstand any manner of life challenges and provide ongoing inspiration.

I felt released. And I knew I was not alone in wanting the kind of freedom that comes from living a life of your own choosing.

Working to achieve that feeling is work worth doing.
