This is what the learning environment at St. Geneviève Catholic School says to its learners, and it didn’t happen by accident.

With 19 years of experience, Principal Laurie Day had a clear philosophy about what learning environments should do.

She understood, from practice rather than theory, that the physical space is a pedagogical tool — that furniture shapes behavior, that materials carry meaning, and that children respond to the sensory quality of the rooms they inhabit.

A childcare space in North Vancouver set out to design a learning environment where collective life wasn't just talked about. It was physically practiced.

One of their most deliberate choices: replacing individual chairs with long wooden benches.

"Children come to the table very differently at a bench than they do with a chair." That’s Sara Sutherland, director of the children’s centre at Capilano University. "In order to support collective life you need to step away from making decisions that are very individualistic."

It reshaped mealtimes. Educators sat with children at the same level. Instead of children staying in their own orbit, they now sit shoulder to shoulder. Connection and conversation is what takes shape.

Many Indigenous traditions hold that a good decision is one that serves seven generations forward.

June is National Indigenous History Month in Canada, and the idea of making choices today that care for the generations ahead shapes how we choose our materials, build our furniture, and design every learning environment we touch.

We still have more work to do in understanding this the way it deserves to be understood. But it's the tradition we try to build toward. One decision at a time that is rooted in longevity for the health of our children and our planet.

This is one of the ways we honor the meaning behind making good decisions. And we’ll keep trying to do better as good stewards.
