VICTORY! After years of fighting, Burquitlam (initially Sobeys-owned) liquor store workers have WON their first union contract that will see 16-23% wage increases

“Two years ago we decided we’d had enough and became the first Safeway/Sobeys liquor store to unionize. We fought against a company that didn’t want to pay above minimum wage. They thought they could ignore us and ignore all the problems… Unfortunately for them, we weren’t going away. Another Sobeys store on Vancouver Island joined our union and we took the bosses to the BC Labour Board for a fair deal. When Sobeys sold all of their liquor stores in British Columbia, we were back at square one, but we still didn’t give up. We got stronger from the lessons we learned. We took the new owners to the Labour Board and we didn’t back down at the negotiating table. We are proud to say we won and have reached a fair deal.” - Olivia Brand, SEIU worker-leader at Burquitlam Liquor

📣 60+ SEIU Brewery Workers at Turning Point Brewery have just ratified their second collective agreement!!

Yoshio Kimura from the grievance & negotiating committee had this to say: "We went into bargaining knowing that we had several departments that were getting paid way less compared to other breweries across Canada. We fought hard to have the lower wages raised closer to parity with both the other breweries and our own higher paying departments, but that was not enough. We knew everyone deserved a raise, and we did not stop pushing back until everyone got a significant increase."

In these uncertain times, it's workers like those at Turning Point that are leading the way to organize and win better job security and strong industry setting standards for working families. Congrats and solidarity with the membership!!✊
