Late this afternoon I was able to tour The Landing, the new 24hr shelter opening soon in Bridgewater as part of their very busy open house and I wanted to share a few thoughts.
Councillor Newell and I saw the shelter beds (photo with multiple beds with separate areas for men and women), the transitional housing space (photo with one bed but the room has a desk and additional independent space on a different floor. There are seven of those), the kitchen and other facilities for learning and assistance and I will say we are impressed.
This is purpose built for this which in my opinion makes a huge difference and will have a positive impact on those saying at The Landing which will have a positive impact on the community.
Earlier this month the residents of Elm Street also had an opportunity to tour the building as well and ask questions of staff and that was received very positively. This was very important to do and ensure they were heard.
SSODA has done a fantastic job preparing this location in a way that will ensure the dignity of those needing the service while respecting the community around it. This is key to what we hope will be a successful opening next week.
When this shelter opens Monday, the current location on Phenix Street will close.
A few final words. This is not a drop-in centre and it is not the same operator or operation the previous one on King Street was. SSODA has the staff, resources and supports to have a positive impact. There are rules in place for clients as well as a community round table committee in place to make sure any issues or questions are addressed.
We left feeling very positive about the setup and plan in place. It was also great to see Minister Corkum-Greek on site as the Minister responsible for these facilities.
In an ideal world we wouldn’t need facilities like this but that is not the reality anywhere, be it Bridgewater or anywhere else in North America. If we are going to have a shelter and the supports that go with it I would like to think this is the model with the most potential.
Time will tell, but I am very hopeful that a future update to you all will be speaking to its success. You can tour the facility until 7pm tonight as part of their open house.

On Saturday evening Trina and I had the pleasure of taking in the South Shore Players latest production in the performing arts space at the old arena on Empire Street.
It was hilarious and well produced and I want to extend my congratulations to the performers and board for another great run of a show. There are more events coming so be sure to follow their social media page for what’s next.
