Fun Facts: Banff in June
1. Longest daylight of the year
June in Banff National Park brings some of the longest days of sunlight in the entire year. Around the summer solstice (June 20 to 21), daylight can stretch to roughly 16 to 17 hours depending on conditions and exact location in the park.

2. Glacier melt is at its peak
June marks the start of peak glacier melt season. This is when iconic turquoise waters like Lake Louise and Moraine Lake become most vivid due to increased glacial runoff carrying fine rock flour.

3. Wildlife is highly active and visible
June is one of the best months for wildlife activity. Bears, elk, and mountain goats are more commonly seen as they move into higher elevations following snow melt and new vegetation growth.

4. Wildflower season begins
Lower elevation trails start blooming in June, especially in sunny valleys and meadows. Alpine wildflowers follow shortly after as snow continues to retreat at higher elevations.

5. Water levels are at their strongest
Rivers like the Bow River are at high flow in June due to snowpack melt. This creates powerful waterfalls, fast moving water, and dramatic canyon conditions such as at Johnston Canyon.

6. First true “summer hiking” conditions
June is when many higher elevation trails begin to open, depending on snowpack. It is the transition month between spring snow and full summer hiking access.
