AutomatedProofing
For those who are not in the know, early last month I completed the sale of my printing companies (Plastic Decorators Inc and Serico-Impro inc) to a group that included our long time production manager as one of the key partners. While the sale was a long time in the works, the end always comes suddenly, doesn’t it?
What started out as a search for investors as we looked to expand and modernize, took a turn rather early on in the discussion towards the notion of selling out right and giving me the opportunity to start fresh.
That decision was made a lot easier because of my involvement with Global Vision in the capacity of reseller of their Automated Proofreading systems. Sometimes you try to fit a square peg into a round hole and sometimes you just know when something is a fit.
From day one of training on the product, I can honestly say that a) I recognized the need within my sphere of contacts; b) I recognized just how good these products really are and c) I got to know very early on what a great support team they have in place.
I know this sounds corny, but I have to say that it feels like this is what I was meant to be doing. While nothing comes easy, and this is no exception, every day for the last month I have woken up knowing that I am going improve people’s work lives. That I am going to make their jobs easier, I am going to help their companies make more money and that I am selling a solution to a very real problem.
When people hear that I sold my company, and ask what I am doing now, the natural inclination is to say that I am selling software. Or that I am selling proofreading solutions. What I have discovered is that I am selling so much more:
1) I am selling freedom: The freedom that comes with the confidence of knowing that the proof is correct before it goes to press. I am selling the freedom of knowing that, as a client, you can free up your time to do more valuable and more creative work. We are unchaining people from the shackles of manual proofreading…the most cumbersome of processes.
2) I am selling insurance: One of the most common things I hear from people is “we haven’t had a major recall yet from our packaging”. Ok. Great. My response is typically “have you had your house burn down?” After the initial “huh?” They usually respond that it has not. “And you still carry house insurance?” The point here is that the average recall due to packaging errors runs in the hundreds of thousands of dollars. Do you really want to trust that kind of risk to a junior copywriter or overworked product manager? Really?
3) I am selling value to the owners: All cosmetics companies that I have dealt with have worked in a similar fashion; every agency pretty much follows a similar model as well. You hire someone because they are creative, detail oriented, knowledgeable, effective, etc. You pay them what they are worth, which is a significant amount of money for an experienced product manager or key account liaison, and then they are asked to read proofs for a large percentage of their time. Read that again. You hire people for their creative brilliance and experience and then you pay them top dollar to read words. Our software solutions allows that reading to be done with far more accuracy (something like 76% vs 99.9%) and in a fraction of the time of manual proofreading , thereby freeing up your creative talent to be creative. Kind of like you get to pay them to spend more time doing the stuff that generates actual revenues and profits if they are that good.
4) I am selling gross profit and I am selling less compromise: this one should be obvious by now.
All this to say that I am excited about this new venture. I am motivated by working with really smart, engaged and talented people at Global Vision, excited about seeing the faces on clients the first time they see these products in action and , mostly, excited to be selling something that helps people to do their jobs better.
