June is when I start getting more calls about mosquitoes here in Southwestern Ontario.

Once the weather warms up and people start spending more time outside, mosquito activity picks up pretty quickly. Most homeowners notice it first in the evenings around decks, patios, and backyards.

Mosquitoes don’t just make it uncomfortable to be outside. Once they start breeding around a property, the activity can build fast, especially after periods of rain and heat.

In Southwestern Ontario, I usually find mosquito activity tied to standing water, clogged gutters, shaded areas, and spots around the yard that stay damp for long periods.

I went through a recent mosquito prevention job in Southwestern Ontario in this month’s journal, including what was attracting them and how we handled it.

When ant activity keeps coming back, it usually means there’s a colony nearby and a clear entry point being used.

At Petty Pest Control in Southwestern Ontario, I don’t just focus on the ants you see. I focus on where they’re coming from and why they’re staying.

I start with a full inspection to trace the trail and identify entry points around windows, doors, and the foundation.

From there, I apply targeted treatment along the active areas and at the source, not just random spots. I also address the exterior where the colony is likely located.

Sealing small gaps is part of the process as well, so new ants can’t follow the same path back inside.

Ant control works best when both the activity and the cause are handled at the same time.

Before calling anyone, I usually recommend Southwestern Ontario homeowners try a few simple things when ants start showing up.

Start with the basics. Wipe down counters using a cleaner that removes scent trails, not just crumbs. Store sugar, flour, and other dry foods in sealed containers so ants don’t have easy access.

It also helps to keep sink areas dry, especially overnight, and check around window trims and door edges for small gaps where they could be getting in. If you have pets, try not to leave food out for long periods.

These steps can help reduce what’s attracting ants and make it harder for them to settle in. They won’t always solve the problem completely, but they can slow it down and sometimes stop it early.

I went into more detail about what I found during a recent ant job here in Southwestern Ontario in this month’s journal.
